Artist Statement
As a landscape painter, my artistic practice centres on immersing myself in the natural environment and forging a deep connection with the landscapes I explore. My work reflects a journey of observation and understanding, often taking months or even years to develop, as I respond to specific landscapes or themes that resonate with me.
My work is deeply inspired by the landscapes of northwestern New South Wales and the Liverpool Plains region, and I feel a strong connection to the land where I live. Recently, I have concentrated on the landscapes of our farming property, which derives its name from the Gamilaraay language and is believed to mean “home” or “nest of the Whistling Kite.” Our property features a unique environment on the western end of Long Mountain, characterised by rocky outcrops and cliffs overlooking the surrounding plains. For the past two years, this scenery has been my focus, and the work presented in the exhibition reflects my fascination with the landscapes that surround me every day.
In my creative process, I primarily work with oils, although I also explore a diverse range of media and techniques. This includes oils, encaustic, and oil pastels on canvas, as well as mixed media on board and paper. I am particularly captivated by the interplay of light in the ever-changing landscape—whether it’s the harsh colours during a drought, the lush growth following rain, the extremes of different seasons, varying weather patterns, or the distinct qualities of light at different times of day.
